Forecast and Warnings for Tropical Cyclones

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must apply meteorological knowledge and skill in forecasting affects of Tropical cyclones, based on an advisory from a Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre

Scenario:       

The forecaster is asked to interpret the Aviation Advisory from the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, assess the area of responsibility that will be affected by the TC, then issue SIGMETs, Aerodrome warnings, Area Forecasts and TAFs as required.

Evidence:

The forecaster applies the appropriate forecasting techniques utilizing

• conceptual models
• knowledge of terrain impacts
• vertical temperature and moisture profiles
• climatology
• numerical and empirical techniques
• interpretation of remotely sensed data

in order to

• complete a thorough assessment of the affect of the cyclone
• identify and forecast areas of severe weather due to the cyclone

• Identify and issue warnings for areas affected by the cyclone.
