Forecaster Performance Criterion 3.1g

Forecast and warn of Volcanic Ash impacting Aerodromes and airspace.

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must prepare effective and timely forecasts for hazardous phenomena affecting aerodromes. Forecaster demonstrates knowledge of Volcanic Ash forecast procedures, and produces forecast ash boundaries for Volcanic Ash Advisory (If working in VAAC). Forecaster demonstrates knowledge of Volcanic Ash SIGMET parameters, and produces SIGMET warnings with ash boundary forecasts

Scenario:       

During an assessment period the forecaster is confronted with meteorological conditions that could lead to hazardous phenomena affecting an aerodrome within the area of responsibility. The forecaster must respond appropriately.

• conceptual models
• interpretation of remotely sensed data
• numerical and statistical output
• terrain impacts
• airport operations

in order to predict

• ash boundaries
• hazardous airspace
• ash movement
