Warnings for severe icing

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must apply meteorological knowledge and skill in forecasting areas of severe icing.

Scenario:       

The forecaster is asked to assess the area of responsibility for potential severe icing and issue the appropriate warnings where applicable.   

Evidence:

The forecaster applies the appropriate forecasting techniques utilizing

• conceptual models
• knowledge of terrain impacts
• vertical temperature and moisture profiles
• numerical and empirical techniques
• interpretation of remote sensed data

in order to

• complete a thorough icing assessment
• identify and forecast areas of severe icing including type (clear, rime, mixed)
