Forecasting wake vortex formation, movement and dissipation

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must apply meteorological knowledge and skill in forecasting conditions conducive to the development of wake vortices, their movement and dissipation.

Scenario:       

The forecaster is asked to assess and diagnose atmospheric conditions within an area of responsibility for the potential development movement and/or dissipation of wake vortices and to disseminate the appropriate forecasts. 

Evidence:

The forecaster applies the appropriate forecasting techniques utilizing

• understanding of factors involved in wake vortex formation, movement and dissipation
• understanding of the effects of stability and winds on wake vortices
• understanding of interactions of wake vortices with other weather patterns (atmospheric waves)
• analysis of surface boundary layer stability
• considers aircraft reports in the diagnosis process
