Forecasting icing

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must apply meteorological knowledge and skill in forecasting areas of icing.

Scenario:       

The forecaster is asked to assess for potential icing within the area of responsibility and issue the appropriate forecasts accordingly.   

Evidence:

The forecaster applies the appropriate forecasting techniques utilizing

• conceptual models
• knowledge of terrain impacts
• vertical temperature and moisture profiles
• numerical and empirical techniques
• interpretation of remote sensed data

in order to

• complete a thorough icing assessment
• identify and forecast icing type (clear, rime)
• identify and forecast icing intensity
