Forecasting turbulence

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must apply meteorological knowledge and skill in forecasting areas of turbulence.

Scenario:       

The forecaster is asked to assess potential areas of turbulence within the area of responsibility and issue the appropriate forecasts accordingly.   

Evidence:

The forecaster must apply the appropriate forecasting techniques utilizing

• conceptual models
• local climatology
• vertical stability
• tropopause and jetstream analysis
• numerical and statistical output
• interpretation of satellite data
• boundary layer evolution
• diurnal changes

The forecaster completes a thorough assessment in order to identify and forecast areas

• high level turbulence
• mechanical turbulence
• mountain wave turbulence
• gravity wave turbulence
