Forecasting precipitation

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must apply meteorological knowledge and skill in forecasting precipitation and associated visibility. 

Scenario:       

Throughout an assessment period the forecaster is asked to forecast precipitation for an area of responsibility.  The parameters may include precipitation type, amount, rate, phase changes, visibility correlations and effects on runway conditions. 

Evidence:

The forecaster must apply the appropriate precipitation forecasting techniques

• knowledge of conceptual models
• interpret remote sensing data
• utilize numerical and statistical guidance
• apply knowledge of terrain impacts

in order to effectively forecast           

• precipitation type
• precipitation amount
• precipitation rate
• precipitation phase
• visibility in precipitation
