Forecasting winds, wind shear, variability and gusts

Performance Criterion Description:

The forecaster must know and apply meteorological knowledge to forecast wind speed,

wind direction, wind shear, variability and gusts. 

Scenario:       

During an assessment period the forecaster is asked to utilize available data and apply appropriate techniques to forecast winds within the area of responsibility.

Evidence:

The forecaster accurately forecasts

• wind speed
• wind direction
• gustiness and variability
• shear (directional and speed)

using appropriate techniques and tools including

• numerical guidance
• statistical guidance
• climatology
• orographic influences
